Oundle

Grade II* early 17th century almshouses comprising two wings one with a date-stone of 1753. The former almshouses now comprise Paine's Cottages on the east wing and the Manse of Oundle Congregational Church in the west wing; both are linked with an Elizabethan gateway supposedly brought from Kirby Hall. The wings were of a 15th century house, the bays being a later addition. The house now missing the central hall was owned by Sir Walter Mildmay of Apethorpe Hall, Chancellor to Elizabeth I. In 1922 W Smalley Law tells us that John Paine conveyed to Trustees the property to become five almshouses on 21st may 1801 for Protestant Dissenters or other Nonconformists at the Trustees discretion. However Kelly's in 1898 says 'There are four almshouses for Protestant Dissenters'.

West Street and sports cars. A motor sport event was held on closed roads in Oundle Town Centre over the Christmas Holiday period. A short time trial was organised to add a bit of racing excitement and certainly proved the point as of the four cars I saw from the start point two crashed or rather spun on the cold and greasy road surface. Large crowds attended and all the coffee shops and eateries were doing a brisk trade.

Escaping the clutches of the metric police, these cast metal signs are fixed to many of Oundle's older buildings, denoting hydrant access points.

Grade II Listed 18th century houses resembling a gate lodge.

Grade II Listed house probably early 18th century re-fronted in the 19th century.

Grade II Listed house. Early 19th century front on much earlier house. Originally with two 2-storey bays, one replaced with a late 19th century shop front. S G Dyson list themselves as 51a so I'm assuming the property was split in two at some stage. Sidney G Dyson started a furniture shop in 1929 (they don't say where) that was changed to a clock shop by his son in law in 1952.
