The ruin of Islington St Mary's church
This 13th c. ruin is maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust. The tower which is still roofed (as is the chancel) is 15th c. and was built at the same time as the porch. It had north and south transepts making it a cruciform church, but without the central tower which seems to have been a Norman idea which died out before by the 14th c. The lead was stolen from the roof in 1970 and never replaced, the church abandoned as a result. In the chancel which is now bricked-up with a separate entrance are three wall memorials. Jane Hulton (1871) whose first husband was Edward Bragg a second, to him. But perhaps the most poignant is to three sons and four daughters of Anthony and Jane Dixon of which only two reached maturity, the rest died in infancy.
