The Ship
By the A149 through Brancaster. One of the tourist hotspots along this stretch of coast during July and August, Brancaster is a fairly quiet village through the rest of the year. The area offers sandy beaches with easy access, and National Nature Reserves as well as golf links in the vicinity; boats and canoes can be hired at the nearby Brancaster Staithe harbour which is owned by the National Trust. Locally-caught fish and mussels and freshly-picked samphire from the marshes can be purchased from road-side fishmongers. Brancaster once was the site of a Roman camp and cemetery called Branodunum, and in later years the centre of smuggling contraband from France.
