The church of All Saints in King's Lynn - path through churchyard
For a view of the church see > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1875282. Depicted here is not a porch or transept but a so-called anchorhold, a small room built onto the church, which once used to house a hermit who spent his or her life in seclusion, with a daily routine of prayer and perhaps offering advice (by using the external window) to those who asked for it. An internal window overlooking the sanctuary of the church enabled the hermit to receive the Sacraments and to speak with the priest. A visit by members of the Society of Medieval Archaeology in 2001 confirmed that this room is a genuine anchorhold, and possibly the only one of its kind that has survived on the south side of a church anywhere in England (generally anchorholds can be found on the north side of a church).
