Walden House - rear elevation
Grade II listed 17th century town house behind the parish church on Market Hill. The Walden family were Catholics and staunch Royalists. The family were debarred from public office after the Glorious Revolution in 1688 as supporters of James III. In December 1914 the former home of Henry Geldart JP was converted to a Red Cross auxiliary hospital with eighty five beds. Throughout the war the hospital treated over 3900 in-patients and further out-patients. It closed in January 1919. After years of Council ownership the building was converted to apartments.

Part of a town ring road, one way (except here for buses), a bit annoying if you have to go nearly all the way round to get out of town in your chosen direction.
