Royal Oak, 13 Crown Street, Saint Ives
Grade II Listed late 17th century public house with front in 18th century style. As can be seen, it claims heritage back to 1502 but the name is a 1660 reference. A newspaper article published in January 1801 tells of a bullock entering the open door and going up stairs. It 'ran with such violence against the front window as to drive the whole of the window-frame into the street, where the animal fell also'. Unhurt it ran down to the bridge and stopped there it leapt into the river and was carried away, never to be seen again. In the 1851 census John White is described in the Royal Oak as 'Publican & Grocers Shopman'. In 1861 William King is described as 'Wine & Spirit Merchant' and by 1891 his son Cuthbert is listed the same. The only reference to the Royal Oak I can find in my directories is; 1854 Thomas Peatling & Sons, Old Royal Oak wine & spirit vaults & spirit merchants. It seems to have turned from a pub to a merchant 1851 to 1854 and back again sometime after 1891.
