The 'Waggon & Horses', Great North Road, Eaton Socon
View north, along what was for centuries the main route linking London with Scotland and the north of England. The Waggon & Horses is one of a good many pubs along this stretch. Not far behind the camera there's the Old Sun, and then (further south) the Wheatsheaf. No doubt most started out as coaching inns, making a good living from 'passing trade'. The settlement pattern here must have amounted to an early form of ribbon-development. In any case, it's good to see that so many of these old road-houses survive in 21st century conditions
