Anaerobic digester and maize clamps under construction near Mepal Outdoor Centre, Cambridgeshire - Photo 1
Thousands of acres of land in The Fens are now being used to grow maize which is pulverized as it is harvested and then transported, often many miles, by large slow moving tractors and trailers to be stored in large silage heaps before being fed into these digester domes to produce gas.
I have not studied the economics of the process but I find it astonishing that the value of the gas (energy) produced per ton is greater than the cost of the diesel fuel used to produce the silage. Diesel is used to cultivate the land, drill the crop, spray the crop, harvest the crop, transport the crop and feed the silage into the digester. It may be a renewable source of energy but whether it is "green" is another thing in my opinion.
In addition the poor quality roads in The Fens will only deteriorate even more with all the additional haulage vehicle using them.
