They bear an inscription "Erected by the Trustees of March Consolidated Charities AD. 1851". I think they may originally have been almshouses.

The Stars P.H.
The name of this pub in The Avenue seems to have been shortened from The Seven Stars. The menus are still decorated with a photograph of the "seven" stars (i.e. the Pleiades).

Star Signs
Around the outside are the twelve signs of the western zodiac, and inside these the symbols of the planets traditionally regarded as their "rulers". The orientation is such that the rulers are symmetrical about the horizontal, apart from the unpaired sun and moon on the left. The colours are probably chosen to indicate the Triplicities or Elements associated with the signs (red = fire, green = earth, yellow = air, blue = water). The triangle in the centre links three signs associated with the same element; the square joins the four signs with the Quality of Cardinal (as opposed to Fixed or Mutable).
