A massive ex-Great Eastern 0-6-0 at March Locomotive Depot
Ex-GE Hill J20 0-6-0 No. 4697 rests along with numerous other freight engines on a Sunday. (See also Image).

An ex-Great Eastern J15 0-6-0 at March Locomotive Depot
No. 7833, a member of the large class of little Worsdell/Holden 0-6-0's, was resting with long ranks of larger freight locomotives on that Sunday in 1946. (It had not yet been given its 1946 number - 5359).

A heavy ex-GER J20 class 0-6-0 at March Shed, 1951
One of numerous freight engines resting on the long sidings at the large Depot serving Whitemoor Yard is an almost indecipherably dirty ex-GER Hill class D81 (LNER J20/1) 0-6-0 BR No. 64688. It was built in 11/22 as GER No. 1283, becoming LNER No. 8283, later 4688 in 1946, withdrawn 1/59 - the first to go. The J20s were the largest 0-6-0s in Britain, until 1942 when the Bulleid Q1s appeared on the Southern.

EX-NER 0-8-0 at March Locomotive Depot
View eastward, towards the massive coaling plant in the extensive Locomotive Yard of the Depot serving Whitemoor Marshalling Yards. Amongst the long lines of resting freight engines is ex-NER Raven Q6 0-8-0 No. 3425 (just renumbered from 2268), which has come down from Newport (Tees-side): it was built 3/20, withdrawn 4/63.

Ex-GE J19 0-6-0 at March Locomotive Depot
In the Locomotive Yard where there were always numerous freight locomotives working trains to/from the Whitemoor Yards, featured in typical filthy condition is ex-GE Hill T77 class (LNER J19/2) No. 4661 (built 12/17 as GE No. 1261), LNER No. 8261 until 1946, withdrawn as No. 64661 in 8/59.

Between Duties
Diesel locomotives layover during the weekend at March Traction Maintenance Depot. The depot has since been demolished and the site is now an industrial estate. The associated Whitemoor Yard was given a new lease of life when Temple Mills yard was partially closed to create a Eurostar depot.

March Railway Depot
Shunters layover at the weekend beside what I believe to be an old steam shed at this depot beside Whitemoor Yard. These depot buildings were demolished in 1987 and replaced with a modern facility. The depot closed in 1995 and an industrial estate has been built on the site.
