Old sea bank near Walpole St Andrew
This old bank now has Follens Road running along the top of it for several hundred metres. It is one of the numerous redundant sea banks between Wisbech and The Wash which have become redundant as land reclamation had progressed north from Wisbech over the centuries. This one was probably once the east bank of the River Nene which used to meander through the marshland of the Nene estuary. The River Nene is now about 2km away and the sea about 8km away. Historical names on the map clearly indicate the boggy past of this area - Walpole Marsh, East Marsh, New Marsh and Old Inclosed Marsh
