The Sunset Rooms in Wisbech St Mary
This building was once the premier entertainment venue for miles around. It was built behind The Railway Bell pub (now demolished) on Station Road and both establishments were owned and run by the late Mr Ellis Plumb, a well known local businessman. During the 1980s and 1990s it was a popular venue for the traditional dinner-dances held by the large factories in Wisbech, such as Smedley's, Metal Box and Spillers, which would be attended by several hundred employees. Mr Plumb promoted several concerts by The Joe Loss Orchestra and numerous other events at the venue before it eventually closed.
It was subsequently used as an industrial unit and a store and at the time this photo was taken it was being offered for sale with an asking price of £100,000+
The walls were once decorated by numerous photos of sunset scenes of the Canadian Prairies taken by Mr John Humphrey, now a local farmer in the village.

The Sunset Rooms sports hall in Wisbech St Mary

The hall was purchased in 2017 by The Wisbech St Mary Sports & Community Centre committee with help from The Hudson Trust, a charity that was set up by farmer Alan Hudson, which donates the profits from its farm to the organisation.
It was then converted into a multi purpose indoor sports hall after being neglected for several years.
In conjunction with the nearby community centre and sports fields the village has some of the best sports and community facilities for miles around, a credit to the volunteers who have worked so hard over the years. See https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1658535
