The Spalding Club on Broad Street in Spalding
The Spalding Club Ltd (commonly known as the Gentleman’s Club) was formed after the Franco-Prussian War, when money was plentiful. Some leading men of the town wanted somewhere to meet and discuss matters in privacy, so they decided to build a club of their own and only admit to membership people whom they thought desirable. The Club was built on the site of the old Assembly Rooms, formerly the theatre in Broad Street and was opened in 1875. Since then the building has been extended, but the principles are broadly the same; a private gentlemen’s club that is an oasis from the pressures of everyday life.

Red Lion Street
Nice Georgian-style house in Red Lion Street. As ever round here the style of a building may not be an accurate guide to its date - the town is a mixture of architectural conservatism and experimentation - and the height of the floors suggests this is probably a late Victorian building.
