Failed core sample
Around 37 years ago the then gas board renewed a major gas main, right through the middle of Bourne on what was then the A151. The backfill was so badly done that Lincolnshire County Council prosecuted them for damaging the highway, and to prove it came along with a specialist trailer behind a van that took core samples to preserve for evidence. I recall watching them come along with a 16mm film camera, because the samples were so loose that they could not be retained in the normal tubes. Following the successful prosecution around a third of the length was re-buried, the bit known as West Street. The outer part, West Road, was never repaired. This is one of those ancient core sites, over which at least 3 lots of top-dressing have been applied since, the most recent of which is still adhering to the top of that ancient repacking, which has recently collapsed.
