Once facing the cattle market, these small 'workman's cottages' now face the car park in the middle of town. These are just about the only houses in town which the council have been unable to force wheelybins upon. They still have a black bag collection system for rubbish.

The red brick Victorian terrace in Hereward Street, Bourne, is just a few yards away from the town centre yet the houses have that air of tranquillity we associate with the 19th century when they were built, before the arrival of the motor car and only the horse and cart was likely to pass this way. The conformity of past years has now gone as individual owners have personalised their properties with new window frames, doors, front fences and even roofs but the original charm remains to make this terrace a most attractive part of our street scene.

Weekly markets can be relied upon to provide a variety of goods at bargain prices and the Thursday market at Bourne is no exception with this colourful collection of basket work containers of all shapes and sizes waiting for new homes when the right buyer comes along.

The cattle market, its location more or less continuous from the days when it was held in front of the Castle gates, stood here until it was closed in 1981 because of changes in legislation. The site was redeveloped in 1988-90 to house a supermarket, car park, and pedestrianised arcade. The first tenant of the supermarket site was the company Budgens, but after they failed to make a success of the site it stood empty for around 5 years until the local Co-op moved in, having closed their own Rainbow superstore on the east of town.

There has been speculation around town that the weekly market is slowly dying through lack of support by both stallholders and shoppers, a recent development because it was always well patronised in years past such as here in 1999.

The delights of Continental shopping came to this small market town in the spring of 2005 when the market places was crammed with gaily coloured stalls selling a wide variety of sweet and savoury delicacies, bread, cheese, vegetables and craft work that attracted hundreds of customers throughout the day.

One of the enduring English traditions for our towns and cities is market day which has been held at Bourne since the 13th century but as a result of declining support in recent years, South Kesteven District Council which holds the market rights, introduced new gaily coloured canopies for the stalls in 2009 in an attempt to attract more business on Thursdays and Saturdays.
