Traditional Victorian Semi-detached houses in Gladstone Street, no two quite the same after 150 years of individualistion. Beyond are a row of later homes from the inter-war years.

These have me flummoxed. From the style they could have been built any time from 1920 to 1960. Without access to paperwork I can't tell. They are not on the 1959 OS map, but they are on the 1969. The snag is, I am not convinced the 1959 map was up-to-date, it looks unchanged from the 1938 one.

This chalet-like bungalow has a very solid looking porch.

Mid-Victorian terrace of 'Artisan's houses' which are quite generous in size, if not in land. These were of a 'superior kind' a local author says, and it is true that each has different and quite intricate architectural detailing. Each block has access to a rear yard by means of a shared passage at the end.

Victorian terraced houses of red brick with blue slate roofs can be found in many parts of Bourne, built during the late 19th century for middle class families and still in demand today such as here in Elm Terrace, an attractive cul-de-sac off North Road.

There is a German company called Faller that makes its money selling kits for buildings for model railways. Their trick is to find a 'typical' building of a particular type and model that. They'd have a really hard time with English Bungalows. They are some of the most individual buildings around. Even when Parker Brothers built rows of them on the Westfield estate, they made them look a little different. When, as here, they were built individually they started off different and then got more different as people customised them.

A pleasant south-western aspect has been exploited here, in one of the Bungalows seen in Image'>Image to create a modern version of a vernandah.

I've lived in town 35 years, and never been down Elm Terrace till today, when I decided to take this picture. The houses have rear gardens, and a bit of land on the left of the road for parking. One was recently sold: they do not come up often.
