Victorian terraced houses of red brick with blue slate roofs can be found in many parts of Bourne, built during the late 19th century for middle class families and still in demand today such as here in Elm Terrace, an attractive cul-de-sac off North Road.

We see a number of things here: street furniture at the bus-stop outside the Croft; the row of Rowan trees planted by the Rotarians along the whole road (Image]), and an emergency vehicle in full blues-and-twos. Mapping agencies are driven mad by the road naming in Bourne. North Street starts at the crossroads in the centre of town, where the old Market was, and heads North. When it gets to the Buttefield Hospital, it stops, and becomes North Road. The house numbering begins again at One. So No.s 8 North Street and 8 North Road are not the same thing at all. The same applies to South Street&Road and West Street&Road. This is North Road.

Gladstone Street is a long, folded cul-de-sac, with this as the narrow entrance. The fine brick house is typical of those built in North Road for the Victorian middle classes.

This little cul-de-sac is an unadopted road that nearly, but not quite, connects through to Gladstone street.

I've lived in town 35 years, and never been down Elm Terrace till today, when I decided to take this picture. The houses have rear gardens, and a bit of land on the left of the road for parking. One was recently sold: they do not come up often.

Mid-Victorian terrace of 'Artisan's houses' which are quite generous in size, if not in land. These were of a 'superior kind' a local author says, and it is true that each has different and quite intricate architectural detailing. Each block has access to a rear yard by means of a shared passage at the end.
