One of the best shops in town, the last man standing from the 13 butcher's shops Bourne once had. The door is plastered with the normal warnings about Covid-19 - with good reason. The man himself had ten days in hospital before Christmas with the fell disease, though he is as hale and hearty as ever now. The alleyway to one side is of interest. It is the route of the Roman Road through Bourne, straddled elsewhere by the Abbey Church. This is King Street.

The southern end of Hereward Street becomes one-way into Abbey Road with a terraced row of nine cottages on the west side, each with a front door opening on to the pavement, once privately owned and rented out but now all owner occupied.

This building spent much of its life as a pub called 'The Marquis of Granby' (the small row of shops behind is named Granby Court). The large upstairs windows light a room that was used for a while as a boxing gym. After the landlord was caught selling drink to children, the place closed and stood empty. It has been re-opened as some sort of fitness or beauty parlour.

In the foreground are the sheds and yard of Alec Day's butcher shop. The road in front of them is the former Roman Road 'King Street', from Water Newton to Ancaster. The noble building behind is the nave of the Methodist church, which fronts onto Abbey Road. Terry Pratchett once wrote of the opera house in Ankh Morpork that it was 'a plain box with the architecture stuck on afterwards', and there is a whiff of this with these Victorian Chapels. This one has an impressive stucco frontage in quite a different style. But the magnificent windows lift the construction out of the 'plain box' category. These splendid windows light a currently inaccessible upper floor. The church is fundraising to radically alter the interior to move the worship onto this upper floor.
