This footpath is well-used and maintained as a path: the pedestrians and a few cyclists have crops in varying stages of growth from being ploughed up to walking by crops as tall as a child all within a year. This footpath follows the course of the Roman Road 'King Street', which having come through Bourne from the south makes a turn at the corner on the A15 and heads toward Stainfield and hence to Ancaster.

Cawthorpe is situated on the edge of a limestone escarpment which runs in a broad arc north through to Lincoln and the Humber estuary. The hamlet is set in rolling countryside some 20 metres (65 feet) at the most above sea level, on the edge of the fens. The woods are on slightly higher ground. The photograph shows the modern buildings south of the Hall, which was once a conference centre and is now a bed and breakfast location. The Roman Road King Street turns off the course of the current A15 few yards outside Bourne, and heads through Cawthorpe on the way to Stainfield, on its alignment toward Ancaster. There are least two other Cawthorpes in Lincolnshire. None of them are of any size.

Cawthorpe Hall was built of locally quarried Barnack rag in 1819 and stands in two acres of lawns and gardens surrounded by mature trees. The house itself has rooms and windows of classic proportions with high ceilings and a gracious sense of space. It is best known as the former home of Robert Gardner (1850-1926), local bank manager turned artist who exhibited at the Royal Academy and who lived here until he died. During his tenancy he added a large studio with great atelier-style windows to catch the light for his painting.

The wide grass verges at Cawthorpe village, just off the main A15 near Bourne, provided excellent parking for travellers who stayed there often, making their Romany carts, vans and horses a familiar sight but after complaints from villagers Lincolnshire County Council has since landscaped both sides of the road by planting a variety of saplings that have now become young trees, making the verges totally inaccessible for camping.
