Hygienic fountain, Paisley
The fountain is located in the angle of Calside and Neilston Road; from there, Causeyside Street leads to the north, as seen in the background, on the right. This was a far from successful picture (and one that I would not consider submitting, had I taken it now). For some much better views, see Image, by another contributor, and Image and Image, which I took later. The last of these was intended as an equivalent but better version of the present picture. The listed building report for the fountain provides further details: http://portal.historic-scotland.gov.uk/designation/LB38934 (at Historic Environment Scotland). The fountain has another basin on its far side; an inscription there says: "GLENFIELD & KENNEDY LTD KILMARNOCK – HYGIENIC FOUNTAIN" Compare the much smaller Image At the time of writing, the firm mentioned on the fountain in the present photograph is still in existence (as "Glenfield Valves Ltd."). An open Bible can be seen on this side of the fountain; there is another on the far side, its pages bearing the text of John 4:13-14 from the King James Version. The fountain uses some familiar design elements: compare the upper part of the Saracen Fountain, which is shown in Image, and described in Image; compare also Image Those last two monuments are modelled after the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates.
