The A40 climbs the Chiltern scarp at Aston Hill
View in the direction of High Wycombe and London, on the first day of April. Further up the hill the carriageway is divided into three lanes, one down, two up (one being a 'crawler' lane, so that heavy vehicles don't impede faster traffic).
It has to be said that - as such things go - this is rather a fine stretch of road, merging into the landscape in a way that its successor, the M40, fails to do.

Footpath through beeches of Aston Wood
The path is close to the A40, but it is not apparent - it has little traffic and the path is sunken into a trough.

Logs by the path in Aston Wood
Evidence of a bit of woodland management. There is not much as this is part of a national nature reserve. Views out are rare as you climb the escarpment, but this gives a hint of a more distant view.
