Just south of the church, this view is of the older timber part of the building, and the side of the Georgian brick rectory which actually faces north, i.e. left in the picture.

Church of St. Nicholas, Britwell Salome
According to the notice board this is in the Benifice (sic) of Icknield. Icknield refers to the Icknield Way which runs by here, but not being sure what a benifice is, I looked it up. Oxford Dictionary :- Benefice -with an E - "property held by an ecclesiastical officer, esp. Vicar or Rector." Hmmm... not sure where that gets us really. I'm guessing it means a group of parishes looked after by one Vicar, or else he gets a cut of the collection or something like that. Anyway, let's leave it there. The church was largely rebuilt in 1867 by Charles Buckeridge. The oldest thing by miles is the Yew Tree just visible at the far end which has been dated to over 1400 years old. As for Britwell Salome :- Britwell "bright spring" - quite common round here. Salome is a family name linked with Sulham near Pangbourne, Berkshire. One Aumaricus de Suleham no less was the local squire here in 1236.

The pastor's entrance
I think most of the churches I have visited have these but I think they are used very little nowadays.
