Royal Diamond Jubilee Memorials, Stonesfield, Oxon
The bottom memorial is inscribed:- "In commemoration of the 60th year of the reign of Queen Victoria. These waterworks erected by public subscription were opened by Consuela Duchess of Marlborough (1877-1964) on the 15th of June 1897". The waterworks cost £200, which was a lot of money at the time. The memorial misspells the name of the Duchess, which was actually Consuelo. She was the daughter of William Kissam Vanderbilt, a New York railway millionaire, and his wife Alva Erskine Smith. It is a pity that the engraved inscription, which was infilled with black paint or similar (much of which has worn off) has not been touched up. The upper memorial's inscription reads:- "Commemorating her Diamond Jubilee Queen Elizabeth II 1952-2012". Image

Seat under two Royal Diamond Jubilee Memorials, Stonesfield, Oxon
The seat is by the junction of The Ridings, Boot Street and Laughton Hill. Immediately above it is a Memorial erected to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897, and the opening of a water works in the village. Above that is another Memorial commemorating the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 2012. There used to be a water tap here but that seems to have been removed. In the hot summers of the early 1890's the local water wells had frequently run dry. A local waterworks was the answer to this and was funded by the villagers and the Duke of Marlborough, who also provided some of the materials.
