The Chequers Inn (3) - sign, 47 Corn Street, Witney, Oxon
This public house is one of the Enterprise Inns chain.
The Chequers is a not uncommon name for pubs and inns, but various theories exist as to the origin of the name, and people can't agree which is correct. Popular ones include (1) that it is derived from the name of an ingredient used in beer making in medieval times, (2) that it derives from a Roman sign to indicate taverns or inns which provided a banking facility and that the word Exchequer is derived from this, and (3) it is connected with the chequerboard (or checkerboard) used to play games such as draughts and chess. No doubt such games were often played in pubs and this sign seems to reflect that theory.

Former Methodist Chapel, 40 Corn Street, Witney, Oxon
The chapel was originally built for the Primitive Methodists in 1869 and replaced an earlier one. The date is shown on a stone at the top of the building. It ceased to be a chapel in 1957. When photographed, the building had been divided into two units. One was occupied by The Solan Goose, a sandwich deli and event caterer, originally established in June 1998. The other was occupied by the aptly named Chapel Barbers.
