Summertown Telephone Exchange, Oxon (1)
Situated in Oakthorpe Road, this TE has the code SMSM and provides telephone and broadband services to 10,863 residential and 623 non-residential premises in Summertown and the surrounding suburbs North of Oxford. The original red-brick building dates from the GPO era, whilst the extension to the left of the photo was added more recently. It is perhaps unfortunate that there is graffiti on the grey door of the new building.

The planning dept. is obviously a bit more relaxed here. Try putting a green tiled extension on a building like this where we live.....

Summertown Telephone Exchange, Oxon (2)
Taken in Stratfield Road, this photo shows the side view of this TE which would appear to date from the 1930s. The ornate windows stand out on this red-brick building which the art historian Nikolaus Pevsner would have approved of. A BT Openreach vehicle can be seen parked to the right of the photo. The numbering ranges of this TE are (01865) 31xxxx, 55xxxx, the (01865) referring to the twenty TEs in the Oxford group, and its postcode is OX2 7BE.
