Originally, bungalow was used in English for a lightly-built house, with a veranda and one storey. In current UK usage it is a convenient word for any one-storey dwelling.

The Old Chapel, Bicester
A close up view of The Old Chapel, in Chapel Street Bicester. Sadly, this wonderful historic building is vacant having in recent years been a restaurant, and a snooker club. It was a snooker club for many years until its closure. Although now boarded up, some interesting original stained glass windows remain as part of the building.
