Now a private house called The Old Wheatsheaf, this building was used for a very long time as a public house called The Wheatsheaf. The former Elephant & Castle Inn (1), Bridge Street, Bampton, Oxon
The building dates from the 17th century with alterations in the 19th century and in the 1960's. It seems to have been a public house for most of its life but it closed at some point in or after 2000 and is now a private house. It had a thatched roof until 1958 when a firework let off some weeks before the 5th November struck the roof and started a fire. After renovation the building was given a slate roof. To the right of the building is Castle Mews which leads to some new housing built on the site of former outbuildings and the pub car park. The building is Grade II listed. Image

The former Elephant & Castle Inn (2) - Halls Oxford & West Brewery plaque, Bridge Street, Bampton, Oxon
Although this pub closed some years ago and the brewery closed decades earlier, this wall plaque survives to the right of the entrance door. There are not a great many of these still in existence. The brewery was founded in 1795 but it was taken over, along with its 300 pubs, in 1926 by Samuel Allsopp Limited of Burton upon Trent. The brewery at Oxford was closed the same year. Samuel Allsopp's successors eventually became part of Allied Breweries. Image
