Duke of Wellington (1), 101 Warwick Road, Banbury
This pub is located on the corner of Warwick Road (B4100) and Union Street, some way out of the town centre. The M & B Traditional Ales signs date from the days when Mitchells & Butlers had its own brewery in Smethwick (now closed). The company's descendant still exists but now runs a chain of managed pubs, bars & restaurants. Someone else still brews the well-known M & B Brew XI, but it is not as easy to find as it used to be. Duke of Wellington (2) - sign, 101 Warwick Road, Banbury
Like a forty year old colour print, the colours on this sign seem to have drifted in different directions. The Duke no doubt looked quite resplendent when the sign was new. The Duke of Wellington (1769-1852) was the famous General who defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815. Subsequently he was twice British Prime Minister. Wellington's victory at Waterloo made him a national hero and many pubs and inns were named or re-named after him. Image
