Silversmith and jeweller in the High
Payne & Son was founded in 1790 and after seven generations is still run by members of the same family. Note the dog supporting a clock above. On the right is a passage leading to The Chequers pub.

The Chequers Public House, Oxford
The Chequers pub is hard to find as access is via a narrow passage off the High Street. Named after the Roman sign for a money lender (chequer board) it has a detailed history as shown on this plaque. For a view of the entrance to the courtyard refer to picture Image

From my extensive knowledge of Oxford derived from being an avid fan of 'Inspector Morse', I know that High Street is known as 'the High' by locals. Here it is seen as it heads east from its junction with St Aldate's and Queen Street, the provider of the viewpoint.
