High Street, Oxford
I waited a few minutes for buses and a taxi to leave, and for the sun to come out! On the right of picture is Queen's College, and, in the distance, is University College and the University Church of St.Mary the Virgin.

Oxford: High Street viewed from tower of St Mary's church
The view is looking east across the rooves of several Oxford colleges adjoining the High Street. The picture was taken from the top of the tower of the University Church of St Mary the Virgin (with a gargoyle on the extreme right). In the foreground on the left is All Souls College with University College in the middle of the picture on the far side of the High Street. The prominent tower at the far end of the High Street is Magdalen College. The waters of the river Cherwell are glinting in the spring sunshine on the far right.

High Street, Oxford
"And there's a street in the place - the main street - that ha'n't another like it in the world." Thus wrote Thomas Hardy in the late 1890s in “Jude the Obscure”. The High Street is generally acknowledged as the centre of the city. This is looking westwards towards Carfax crossroads, with University College on the left and Queen's College on the right. Beyond the bus is the University Church of St Mary the Virgin. The frontage of the college was designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor as part of a substantial rebuild in the C18th. The college was founded during the C14th by Robert de Eglesfield, chaplain to Queen Philippa of Hainault (wife of King Edward III); hence its name. It seems that the college has had a long association with the north of England, in part because of its founder; Eglesfield being a village in Cumberland. This connection is still reinforced through Hastings Senior Scholarships that are awarded annually to graduate students from the universities of Bradford, Hull, Leeds, Sheffield.
