New Housing by the Mill Stream
A lot of new building in this part of Abingdon. These apartments look out over the Abbey Mill Stream near the ruins of Abingdon Abbey.
It looks like the architects were having a little abbey moment themselves when they sketched out this fancy arched balcony.

Abingdon railway station (site), Oxfordshire
Opened in 1856 by the Abingdon Railway, later part of the Great Western Railway, this was the terminus of a short branch which left the Paddington-Oxford line south of Radley. The station closed to passengers in 1963 and completely in 1984.
View west towards the buffers. This viewpoint would have been just beyond the end of the single passenger platform, which would have run straight ahead. A goods yard was to the left of the image. The site is mostly a supermarket, but Abbey Close cuts across the site between the platform and the site of the station building. No trace remains.

Coot with young
In the branch of the Thames which runs alongside the Abbey Gardens. The nest was nearby but I couldn't get a good view of it.

Near site of Abingdon station, Morland's brewery maltings, 1992
Malthouse in Abingdon belonging to Morland's brewery, seen from the junction of Abbey Close and Vineyard. Here, thirty years before, on Stert Street was the terminus of the short ex-GWR branch from Radley, closed from 9/9/1963. The station had been immediately south of the malt-house, to the right.

The Abingdon Needle
The Abingdon Needle is a bath stone spire topped with stainless steel situated near the entrance to Abbey Grounds. The spire represents the turned spire of the Anglo Saxon church that stood on the site centuries before the Abbey was built. The stainless steel cap acknowledges Abingdon's close link with modern and new technologies past and present. The sculpture is the work of public artist Michael Fairfax, who was commissioned to design a landmark feature to celebrate the 450th anniversary of Abingdon's town charter. This artwork was funded by Abingdon Joint Environmental Trust - which is jointly funded by the District Council and Abingdon Town Council together with contributions from a developer of new houses near the site.
