Jowett Walk
Jowett Walk takes its name from Benjamin Jowett (1817-1893), the Master of Balliol College (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Jowett ), and along the north (right-hand) side of it lies the Balliol College sports ground. Dorothy L. Sayers, in "Gaudy Night" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaudy_Night ), places Shrewsbury College - a thinly-disguised version of Somerville, her own alma mater - on that sports ground.

Oxford - Holywell Street and St.Cross Road
What I like about Oxford, as a pedestrian, is the way in which road traffic is restricted in certain parts of the city. As an ex-cyclist, I know to look and listen for cyclists doing unexpected things! I can never understand why so many "rules" have to be broken by our two-wheeled friends.

Holywell Street, Oxford
Looking towards the junction with Longwall Street and St Cross Road. Both of the houses seen here are owned by Merton College and used for student accommodation. The house in the foreground, no 2 Holywell Street, dates from the early 17th century, but was partly remodelled in the 18th century. Further along, no 1 also probably dates from the 17th century but was re-cased in the late 18th century. Between 1947 and 1974 it operated as a hotel.

I still remember when many of these roads were still open in the 80s and had free parking as well in many.

Holywell Street, eastern end
Now that the street is traffic-free there is very little to detract from the charmingly historic impression it gives. The stone house with three dormers is originally C17 and others are of both earlier and later dates.
