Bodleian Vicinity, Oxford
This is Broad Street where the Protestant Oxford Martyrs, Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley (16 October 1555), and later Thomas Cranmer (21 March 1556), were burnt at the stake, outside the then northern city walls. Glancing along it, the ivy-clad building is Trinity College - founded in 1555 on land previously occupied by Durham College, home to Benedictine monks from Durham Cathedral - and further long nearer to George Street is Balliol College - founded c.1263 with funds given by John 1st de Balliol (Sheriff of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, 1261-62). The first Oxfam charity shop, together with its office, were established by Cecil Jackson-Cole (1901-1979) in 1947 at No.17, Broad Street. This picture was taken from outside the University's formal function venue, the Sheldonian Theatre.

Broad Street, Oxford - May Day revels 1979
May Day is celebrated by students and (some) townsfolk every year from dawn. Many events occur: in this case Morris Dancers (in white) are using the platform of the New Bodleian Library on the right as a stage.
