East Challow: former Nalder & Nalder Ironworks
The two four-bay wings are pretty basic and functional - but not the central entrance bay, where there's a definite attempt at architectural style.
The date 1840 is inscribed above the cornice and the massive 'frieze' of the centre bay. Once I'd noticed that date, the style made sense: it's a not-very-bold attempt at what passed for 'Egyptian' at the time. But in any case the building has a lot of character, and you have to hope that a new use can be found for it that will keep it safe in the long-term.

Iron works by the canal
The former Nalder & Nalder iron works at East Challow which is very close to the old Wilts and Berks canal which was probably why it was built here in the first place as the canal supplied it.

House on the canal
One problem the Wilts and Berks Canal Trust will have to overcome is that the house over the hedge here sits on the old canal bed. There probably would have been a bridge here as well but it was removed years ago. The footpath along the canal can be made out to the right of the hedge.

The Ironworks, East Challow
Once run by Nalder & Nalder, the ironworks, like the adjacent Canal, are disused, a reminder of times gone by.
