Before the M60
Taken in late 1988 from Hollinwood station platform, which extended over Bower Lane bridge, Hollinwood Avenue became Bower Lane where the road narrows. The bridge was notorious for demolishing double-deck buses due to reduced height. The terraced houses are vestigial remnants of Bower Colliery's surroundings. The ex-Ferranti factory was being converted for use by Mirror Group newspapers. The scene has been transformed completely by the advent of the M60 motorway.

Ferranti Works/MEN Printing Plant, Hollinwood
The Ferranti factory at Hollinwood was built after the Second World War on the old Bower Colliery site. In its heyday, it produced power transformers and later, it was used to for container lifting trucks as the building had the height to do so. The transformer works building is now used as a newspaper printing plant for the Manchester Evening News.

A Rochdale-Manchester Victoria train arrives at Hollinwood. If you look carefully, three former cotton mills are visible, with chimneys of several others already demolished also in view. None remained in 2008 http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/804782.

A Manchester-Oldham-Rochdale train leaves Hollinwood station around 13.00 on April 9th, 2008. In my youth, this view was a mass of cotton mills and associated terraced housing. For a similar view from 29 years earlier (1979) see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/811900
