Heron Mill, Hollinwood
Cotton spinning mill built 1905. Architect was P S Stott and there were 105,000 spindles turned by a 1400 horsepower inverted vertical cross compound steam engine by G Saxon of Openshaw. This is the end of the projecting engine house. The boiler house was probably at the lower level in front where there has been demolition. The chimney is long gone. The lodge (cooling pond) was to the left and now appears to have been filled in and turned into a car park. The engine had cylinders 27" and 56" bores by 4' stroke. It ran at 75 revolutions per minute and drove by 30 ropes from the 20' flywheel. The flywheel would have been line up with the large window and the rope race would be perpendicular to the long axis of the mill.
