Diamond Ropeworks
This little mill has now been demolished (1995) and the steam engine in the room with the tall arched window is now at Bolton Steam Museum. The angled glazing covers the rope race by which power was transmitted from the engine to each floor by ropes from the flywheel.

Diamond Ropeworks, Royton
Also known as Cocker Mill and Irk Mill. Built earlier than 1832 originally. Used for fustian cutting by 1891 and taken over in 1897 by Hardman, Ingham & Dawson Ltd for rope and twine making. This ceased following a fire in 1983 and it was taken over in 1975 by Sammy-Woodland Ltd for scarf manufacture. Finally closed 1994 and demolished 1995. The steam engine was saved and is at Bolton.

Steam engine, Diamond Ropeworks, Royton
Scott & Hodgson of Guide Bridge built this 250 horsepower inverted vertical compound in 1912. It is now preserved at the Bolton Steam Museum. Should be in steam at major bank holidays.

Is that a body in there?
Steam engine at Diamond Ropeworks. View from up the rope race. The levers bottom centre are driving the airpump. This was a magical site. The engine was later acquired from the scrapman, somewhat damaged, and is now on display at Bolton Steam Museum
