Rochdale Town Centre Redevelopment
A start has begun on yet another attempt to increase Rochdale's share of the sub-regional retail offer. Here the old Electric House on Smith Street is being demolished to make way for new development. The parish church can be seen on the skyline.

This shows the commencement of the underground section of the river as it flows through Rochdale Town Centre. The cotton waste warehouse of John Baron is prominent on the skyline. The small street to the left, blocked off by a concrete post, is called Weir Street.

Rochdale: Smith Street
Looking east along Smith Street towards the new bus station, a tram for Ashton via Oldham and Manchester stands ready to leave, (If going to Ashton, you would get there more quickly, if less comfortably, on the 409 bus!)

Looking west along Smith Street, Rochdale, Lancashire
This is looking from Smith Street back towards the Town Centre. By the late 1960s, Rochdale's blue and cream Corporation buses had been subsumed into a much larger oganisation based on Manchester, and had been repainted into orange and white livery. The route numbers, previously 1-24, had been changed to new ones above 400, so that the bus on the right, which would have been 6 before, had become 457! Meanwhile the single-decker bound for Leeds belonged to a separate company and retained its 28 number.

Rochdale: Central Metrolink station
The Town Centre Metrolink station appears virtually complete, but will not get a service until early 2014. In this picture, the old bus station building with multi-storey car park, and a corner of the 'Black Box' office building, also appear.
