Cheetham Street, Rochdale, Lancashire
This part of Cheetham Street, seen in this 1968 photograph, will soon become a dual carriageway, with the buildings on the left all demolished, and those on the right continuing for a while in a kind of limbo. The bracket arms carrying the street lights here once carried tram wires.

Geoff Wood's shop, Cheetham Street, Rochdale, Lancashire
Geoff Wood was most annoyed when he was told that his second-hand book shop would have to be demolished to make way for the new Ring Road. He had been there for many years. He was quite a character, always prepared to haggle or bargain about the price of a book, but you could pick up a good bargain if you had a sharp eye.

Cheetham Street, Rochdale, Lancashire
The photograph shows that, by 1970, this part of Cheetham Street had been incorporated into the Rochdale Inner Ring Road, with the shops on the north side having been demolished, while those on the south side survived - for a time.

The Co-op Museum, Toad Lane, Rochdale.
Toad Lane, Rochdale, where the Co-operative Movement began in 1844. The Street is now a Historical conservation area with the Rochdale Pioneers Museum as its focal point. In 1981 the Toad Lane conservation area received a Civic Trust Award as the re-creation of a 19th/early 20th Century street by the Rochdale Metropolitan Borough, Greater Manchester Council and the Co-operative Union, the custodian of the Museum.
The Toad Lane Store has been a Museum since 1931 devoted to the story of the Rochdale Pioneers who began trading there in 1844 - a Co-operative Society with 28 members and £28.00 working capital.

The Church of St Mary In The Baum
St Mary in the Baum (http://www.rochdaleparishchurches.org.uk/stmary.html ), on St Mary's Gate/Toad Lane, was founded in 1740 as a chapel of ease to minister to the people living north of the River Roch.
Today's church building was opened in 1911.
