Rochdale Town Centre, June 1949
This was long before the present bus station was brought into use, and most bus services started from the Town Centre. The left hand bus is an Oldham Corporation vehicle, and the other three are Rochdale Corporation. The Regal Cinema is at the right, and Williams Deacon's bank to the left. At that time, some older women could still be seen in the traditional Lancashire garb of black shawl and skirt, sometimes with clogs.

The River Roch is briefly seen...but only briefly...
In Rochdale's town centre, the River Roch has been covered over for very many years, so that there are none now alive who can remember it uncovered. By the end of the nineteenth century, industrialists had been pouring filth into the river to the extent that it had become a lifeless stinking ditch, and the river covering was seen as the solution. But now, almost all the pollution has been stopped, and real, live, fish have again been seen in the river. The Town Centre stretch was briefly exposed, together with part of the old bridge, when remedial work had to be done in 1996.
Rochdale could by now have had a lovely centre, the envy of other northern towns, with a clean, fresh river running freely through. But sadly there was not the vision or determination to open out the river - after all, it might impede motor traffic. As always happens, the Philistines won, and the river covering remains.

General Post Office, Rochdale
In 1951 there was no thought of privatisation or closure of post offices, and this large and busy office in the Town Centre served the public well. The saloon bus standing outside is destined for Castleton via Deeplish, route number 1.
