31, Toad Lane
This modest shop, on Toad Lane, was where the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society began trading on December 21 1844. The building, which is Grade II-listed (List Entry Number:1084256 https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1084256 Historic England), was originally a house and later became a warehouse. The Pioneers rented the premises at 31 Toad Lane and moved out in 1867, by which time it had become too small for their needs. It later came to be used as a warehouse.
Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society was the first successful consumers' co-operative and is regarded as the birthplace of the modern co-operative movement who later purchased it, and opened it as a museum in 1931. The building, which has been considerably enlarged, now houses the Rochdale Pioneers Museum.

The Pioneers' Shop
The shop at 31 Toad Lane was originally rented by the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society which began trading on December 21 1844, selling "pure, unadulterated food at fair prices and honest weights and measures". The society was the first successful consumers' co-operative and is regarded as the birthplace of the modern co-operative movement who later purchased, and opened, it as a museum, now known as The Rochdale Pioneers Museum. The ground floor faithfully recreates the original shop together with its rudimentary furniture and scales.
