The Sentinel, Bacup
The Sentinel is a modern sculpture that sits on the hillside overlooking the town of Bacup. It was created in 1998 to highlight links between the rural and industrial heritage of the area.
Meaning “soldier posted to keep guard over a special place”, Sentinel incorporates two traditional skills used in the Irwell Valley, stonewalling and felting, and is made from local stone.
The artist, Jane Dunn, learnt stonewalling from a local craftsman and involved local people in workshops to encourage a sense of their ownership in the piece (http://www.irwellsculpturetrail.co.uk/sculpture.html?name=The%20Sentinel Irwell Sculpture Trail).
