Bankside Lane is a quiet and peaceful place to live, as there is no through traffic - no vehicular exit at the southern end is physially possible, so effectively it is a long cul-de-sac. Even the northern entrance is up a steep and twisty hill, so no cars come up here unless they need to.

At 867227 a right of way crosses Bankside Lane; to the west it is a public bridleway, and gives access to Maden Recreation Ground. It appears to be perfectly passable, but I have never seen a horse on it.

The eastern arm of the right of way which crosses Bankside Lane at 867227 has no bridleway rights and is a footpath only; it appears very overgrown. If passage is possible, it would emerge onto Plantation Street and Market Street.

This brilliant show of foxgloves shows that wildflowers can provide just as attractive display as cultivated varieties. Photographed in an untended garden at the end of Newchurch Old Road.

Seen from its junction with Bankside Lane, Newchurch Old Road, although narrow, looks driveable, but motorised access is not really possible beyond Huttock Top Farm, where there is a small car park for visitors to 'Animal Quackers', a sort of children's zoo. Drivers of 4x4 vehicles may imagine they can make further progress beyond here, but this is possible for only about 100 yards to a point where the Old Road has become completely filled with vegetation, and even pedestrians have to leave the 'road' and walk along a footpath over the rough moorland ground alongside.

Installed to complement the nearby "Birds" sculptures, each panel in the railings represents one of the important industries that contributed to the growth of the town in the nineteenth century and the traditions that local people still feel are important. They depict quarrying, cotton mills, shoe making, brass bands, cricket, theatre, the woollen industry and the Britannia Coconutters.
