John Bright's Fieldhouse Mills, Rochdale, Lancashire
By 1971 the left-hand mill was disused and partially demolished, but Bright's continued to use the other mill (with stack). Bright's were always regarded as a good firm to work for - they provided, for instance, a creche where babies and small children could be looked after while their mothers were at work.

John Bright's Fieldhouse Mills, Rochdale, Lancashire
John Bright was a mill owner, sometime MP for Rochdale, and a social reformer. He believed that factory workers should enjoy reasonable work conditions and made sure that was the case for his own workers. The two brick-built factories shown here were owned by John Bright and sons; the left hand one, with the flag, became redundant shortly after this 1967 view and was pulled down. The houses are in Joy Street, and the photograph was taken from the first floor window of a house in Scarr Drive.
