Directors' Arms, Castleton, Rochdale, Lancashire
A pub with a unique name, which arose from its use by the Directors of the nearby Manchester and Leeds Railway for their meetings. The directors are represented by the fine, though faded now, sign on the end wall. The future for this pub does not look good - at the time of the photograph it was empty and for sale.

Rochdale West signalbox
The brick building whose roof pokes out above security fencing and overgrown former sidings is the new (2012) signalbox for the Rochdale & Smithy Bridge area. It is ultimately intended to be a remote relay room and emergency control panel for an enlarged Manchester North signalling scheme. The signaller cannot see any of the trains he or she controls, though they can be felt and heard as they pass by, though at this point such trains are under the control of a different signalbox, Castleton East Junction, situated across the main running lines about 100 yards away.
