Ensor Mill, Castleton, Rochdale
A former cotton spinning mill of 1908. The large gap on the left was the large engine house containing back to back horizontal steam engines driving in opposite directions. One was a tandem compound and the other a cross compound. The grey cladding marks where one rope race was. Now in other uses. The chimney in the background is Arrow Mill.

Ensor Mill - steam engine
This is the other steam engine that shared the engine room at this mill (see Image). This was a horizontal tandem compound built in 1908 by Wm Sharples & Co Ltd of Ramsbottom. The Corliss valve cylinders were 18.5" and 39" bores by 48" stroke. The flywheel was 22' diameter and drove by cotton ropes. It was rated at 750 indicated horsepower at 72.5 rpm on steam at 160 psi. It ran until 1974 and was scrapped the following year.

Ensor Mill, steam engine
This mill contained both a horizontal tandem compound engine and a horizontal cross compound engine. This is the latter and was built in 1915 by Yates & Thom Ltd of Blackburn. The Corliss valve cylinders developed 750 indicated horsepower and the drive was by ropes from the 22' diameter flywheel. it stopped in 1974 and was scrapped the following year (Colin Bowden information).

March Bridge, Rochdale Canal, Castleton
Presumably dating from the period of construction of the Canal around 1800. The bridge has heritage protection as a Scheduled Monument but does not have Listed Building status, and the Historic England Listing does not have any description.
