Kirkholt: Small green off Balderstone Road
The Kirkholt estate should not be dismissed as 'just one of those big council estates'. It is, in fact, a very pleasant place with plenty of open spaces and mature trees.

Part of the "dodgy" Kirkholt estate. Not a place to hang about with a camera.

Kirkholt - Rugby League Pitch
This pitch was used by the long defunct Spotland Rangers Amateur Rugby League Club for many years and formed part of Balderstone Park. Quite why a team called "Spotland" played on Kirkholt is another matter. The changing rooms can be seen at the back of the picture. The pitch was briefly used by Balderstone Warriors Amateur Rugby League Club for one season (2007-08?) until they folded. (details kindly supplied by R. Mitchell)

Kirkholt: Arkwright Way
The large Kirkholt Estate was Rochdale Corporation's answer to the post-WWII housing crisis. Much of the estate was built by direct labour, and it must be said that this estate has stood the test of time very well. Many of the houses are now in private hands, and all are well kept. The estate is pleasant and open, with very few, if any, of the 'tinned-up' houses often found on large council estates elsewhere.

Kirkholt:Balderstone Road
Looking west. Balderstone Road is served by the No 6 bus route from Rochdale Town Centre, which performs an elaborate one-way loop, crossing itself in one place, back to Rochdale centre. By the way, that is not my car parked illegally on the pavement in the photograph. I got there by bus!
