The Horse and Jockey is, and always has been, a basic working-class pub, and is to be congratulated for having survived until now in what has become an increasingly difficult environment in which many of the people living around it would not know how to pronounce the name of the road, Well i' th' Lane, correctly.

Well i' th' Lane Mill, Rochdale, Lancashire
In 1951 this small woollen mill was still going strong, but like most other textile mills in the area, it is now but a memory. I wonder if the lad seen returning late after his lunch break is still alive?
