The 'Horse and Jockey', Well i' th' Lane, Rochdale, Lancashire
The Horse and Jockey is, and always has been, a basic working-class pub, and is to be congratulated for having survived until now in what has become an increasingly difficult environment in which many of the people living around it would not know how to pronounce the name of the road, Well i' th' Lane, correctly.

Well i' th' Lane Mill, Rochdale, Lancashire
In 1951 this small woollen mill was still going strong, but like most other textile mills in the area, it is now but a memory. I wonder if the lad seen returning late after his lunch break is still alive?

The 'Horse and Jockey', Well i' th' Lane, Rochdale
A no-nonsense pub where you can get a good pint, in this case Samuel Smiths of Tadcaster - note the Yorkshire Rose proudly displayed, even though we are in Lancashire here. There are quite a few Samuel Smith's houses in Rochdale, because when the local Manor Brewery ceased brewing, the business was sold out to Samuel Smith's. You won't get a better pint - remember, Inspector Morse used to drink it!
