This small fish and chip shop has existed as such for at least sixty years, but on a recent visit it appeared to be out of use.

Well Street, Rochdale, Lancashire
Looking south-eastwards along Well Street from its junction with Wellfield Street, we can see that it is one of very few roads remaining in the borough that retains its original sett-paving.

Well i' th' Lane, Rochdale, Lancashire
The name of this road still gives pronunciation difficulties to 'comed-off 'uns', whether they be from Karachi or Kenilworth, or London or Lahore. For those who would learn, it is said in two halves separated by a glottal stop, thus: "Welli*thlane", where * represents the glottal stop. Practice a bit, and you'll get it. The fish and chip shop on the left has been one for at least sixty years, but appears to be out of use and ready to fold.

The 'Horse and Jockey', Well i' th' Lane, Rochdale, Lancashire
The Horse and Jockey is, and always has been, a basic working-class pub, and is to be congratulated for having survived until now in what has become an increasingly difficult environment in which many of the people living around it would not know how to pronounce the name of the road, Well i' th' Lane, correctly.

Well i' th' Lane Mill, Rochdale, Lancashire
In 1951 this small woollen mill was still going strong, but like most other textile mills in the area, it is now but a memory. I wonder if the lad seen returning late after his lunch break is still alive?
